Prince Setanta Generation Game

The charity steward of Prince Setanta Mark Lodge No 1446 based in Poulton Le Fylde is Tony Thackrah and he is never one to rest on his laurals in his quest to raise funds for various good causes.

Morecambe Brass Band is the latest recipient of Tony’s fund-raising endeavours. The band is a registered charity which aims to provide all with an opportunity to take up an instrument and play in the band. Funds were being sought to purchase a cornet to enable a youngster who couldn’t otherwise afford to buy one to take up the instrument.

A minimum of business was the order of the day at the latest meeting of the lodge. WM Steven Thackrah welcomed APGM Giles Berkley to the meeting along with Provincial A.D.C. John Dean.

The meal following the meeting was a “curry night” at which wives, family and friends were welcomed. I have to say I, and my wife Su, thoroughly enjoyed the food on offer.
The diners
In the preceding week I had attended Mark lodges at Barrow in Furness, Ulverston, Morecambe and Garstang all of which had offered up meals on the theme of pie and potatoes, they were all actually quite different and very tasty but it was nice to have a change of menu even though I had to travel out of my area of responsibility for it.

Tony and Steven were not the only members of the Thackrah dynasty present. Tony’s mum Maureen along with Steven’s son Max made up four generations of the clan.
The diners
The evening raised £325 for the cause. There was of course the inevitable raffle which was very well supported.

A football signed by the players had been donated by Morecambe A.F.C. A competition was held which involved rolling pound coins at the foot ball with the one resting nearest to it being declared the winner and owner of the memorabilia. Max must be a Shrimps fan as he tried valiantly to win the ball which had enticingly been stored in his home for few weeks under a strict “look but don’t touch”  instruction.

Despite all his best efforts Max only managed the second placed coin. The most adept at throwing his money away had been Giles. However, after Steven had presented him with his winnings the coin rolling champion called Max forward and handed the ball over to one very pleased young man.

A pleasant evening with good food, enjoyable company and money being raised for a worthy cause – what is there not to like.

Tony isn’t one to blow his own trumpet so I will do it for him and the others involved in arranging the evening – well done your efforts are appreciated.
